SAINT-SAËNS (Camille). Autograph letter to Madame Henriette - Lot 404
SAINT-SAËNS (Camille). Autograph letter to Madame Henriette Fuchs, founder-director of the Concordia, singer and music critic, dated January 14, 1886, Cologne. 1 in-8 leaflet of 4 pages (2 handwritten). "Dear Madame, need I tell you that my heart has remained at the Concordia and that it bleeds at the thought that the Christmas Oratorio is going to have a luxury performance that the author will not hear? You are marvelous (?) in this duet and the trio, and Madame (?) seems to have been created expressly for the Alleluia, or rather the Alleluia written for her. As for the choruses and the ensemble in general, they seemed to me to be animated by such faith, that for a moment I thought I had died, entered glory and posterity. That's no way to execute the living. This foretaste of immortality is undoubtedly all I'll have of it, and I'm all the more grateful to Concordia for having given it to me, grateful to you consequently, for aren't you Concordia itself, as the lyre is poetry!". He concludes the letter with customary courtesies (the edge of the first sheet is a transparency instead of paper, but the author has written on it as if it were original).
