ROPARTZ (Guy). Letter to Charles Munch dated January 30, 194 - Lot 401
ROPARTZ (Guy). Letter to Charles Munch dated January 30, 1943, on a double-sided in-16 card: "My dear friend, how sorry I was to leave Paris without seeing you again! I would like to know that your indisposition, which deprived me of a meeting I was so looking forward to, has not had any consequences: I hope so. Here I am, back in Lanloup, reliving for a long time the truly exceptional hours I owe you. You are a great chef and an admirable friend! Everyone knows and recognizes that you are the first, but only the quality of my affection and the privileges that have experienced it can properly appreciate it, and what more dazzling testimony can you give to your old friend than by offering him last Sunday's beautiful party! Thank you again, my dear Charles, from the bottom of my heart. Please present my respectful tributes to Madame Munch and believe in my most sincere attachment. J. Guy Ropartz. From all sides, I receive friendly messages: not one that does not insist on the beauty of your performances" / IDEM. Autograph letter to Charles Munch dated January 5, 1944. 2 folios in-8: "My dear friend, I am delighted that you are rescuing from oblivion this Fourth, which has not appeared on a concert program since 1912. It will therefore be a new work for many of your listeners. The downside is that I'm unable to travel to Paris at the moment. We're in serious personnel trouble (which will eventually put you off the country) and I can't leave my daughter alone to get out of it. I would have been delighted to see you again, to hear you and to hear myself. These are times of renunciation. But I'm quite at peace with my interpretation. There are no metronomic indications on the score. Your sensitivity and your absolute penetration of what I have written will easily find the right movements, helped perhaps also by the memory you may have retained of the performance of the work in the autumn of 1921, a performance in which you took part, for at that time I still had the good fortune to have you near me. What's more, I believe that the movements follow one another quite naturally. I'd like you to include the following in the program: Symphony in C major No. 4 allegro moderato - allegro and allegretto allegro molto. (This symphony is played without interpretation) (...). This is followed by a few considerations about concert dates and polite formulas. Guy Ropartz (1864-1955) was a French composer. Charles Munch (1891-1968) was a French conductor of German origin / Set of 2 pieces.
