MAILLOL.- LONGUS. Daphnis et Chloé. [Translation by Amyot revised and completed by P.-L. Courier. Original woodwork by Aristide Maillol]. [Paris, Les Frères Gonin], 1937, 8°, full black shark skin (coral shark), smooth spine titled in palladium, edge-to-edge lining in orange Cape morocco extending to the outer edge of the boards forming a fine scroll, Japan vermilion paper endpapers slightly edged on the reverse, untrimmed, covers and spine cons. in black half-box folder lined with anthracite lambskin velvet, slipcase lined (binding signed H. Liesen 2009). Ex-libris Jacques Culot and Christiane Moulu. Edition illustrated with 48 woodcuts including the cover vignette. Limited edition of 500 numbered copies on Maillol paper (ex. no. 287), signed in pencil by the artist under the justification. Enriched with a printed portfolio bearing the title "Epreuves rares", consisting of 21 variants. The entire work is mounted on tabs. Daphnis et Chloé is a superb Greek romance novel, attributed to a certain Longus (about whom we know virtually nothing) and dating from the 2nd or 3rd century CE. A fine copy.
