FREIDA - MIRBEAU (Octave). Le Jardin des supplices. Illustrated with original etchings by Raphaël Freida. Paris, Javal et Bourdeaux, 1927, large 4°, leaves, filled green cover, fancy paper-covered folder and slipcase (cover spine faded, folder spine browned, slipcase rubbed and damaged). Limited edition of 525 copies, numbered 1/90 Annam, 3rd paper after 15 Japon and 60 Japon impérial, with 3 states and one plate refused in 2 states. Edition with 11 original etchings signed by Freida. Raphaël Freida began his career as an illustrator in 1909. "Le Jardin des supplices" was his last work, for which he was awarded the gold medal at the Salon des Artistes in 1928. In this book, illustrated for Octave Mirbeau, bodies are under tension, mutilated, and the subject of morbid eroticism. The line is aggressive and incisive.
