STEINBECK (John). The Grapes of Wrath. Translation by Karin - Lot 186
STEINBECK (John). The Grapes of Wrath. Translation by Karin de Hatker. Definitive French text by Albert Debaty. Brux, Les Éditions de Kogge, "Messages", [1942], 8° full margins, full color fold-out map between pp. 136 and 137 (placed upside down), full publisher's cloth titled in gold on upper board (small tear at tail of spine, not serious). First edition of the French translation, printed in an edition of 375 copies, 1/275 on large-margin Cartex register paper, luxuriously bound. This is the very first French translation of "The Grapes of Wrath", the seminal work of American literature that John Steinbeck composed, driven by anger and indignation, between May and December 1938, and which was published by Viking Press in New York in April 1939. The book was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1940. This translation predates the one by Maurice Coindreau and Marcel Duhamel for Gallimard in 1947. The book, which shows the misery of small farmers in the United States during the Depression, appeared as part of anti-American propaganda with the approval of the German censors. A good copy.
