Paris, Presses de la Cité, October 15, 1948, 8°, 516 p., half-skin of black banded Pakistani goatskin, smooth spine titled in gold, boards decorated with grey-green Nepalese paper printed vertically with small black wavy motifs, anthracite paper lining and endpapers, cover, spine and dust jacket (of the current edition) cons. (2 or 3 russets on the edges) (binding P. Goy and C. Vilaine, 2016). Ex-libris Jacques Culot. First edition of a novel considered Simenon's masterpiece. 1/200 numbered copies on Alfama du Marais vellum, the only large paper. Copy with a photograph by Georges Simenon (Agence Interpress, Paris, 1955). Edition containing the complete text of the novel, which was reworked following a lawsuit (June 1952) brought by Verviers ophthalmologist Marcel Chaumont, who felt defamed (Menguy, 142).
