Paris, NRF, 1933, large 8° (22.2 x 13.4 cm), full cherry morocco, palladium and black oeser filleting, smooth spine titled in palladium, black oeser fillets and caissons, silver filleting, filleted edges, gilt edges, full red morocco linings and endpapers filleted in silver and black, covers and spine, slipcase (binding signed E. and A. Maylander). Ex-libris Raoul Simonson. Pre-original edition of 10 copies on Chine, monogrammed by Jean Paulhan (ex. no. 7). Enriched with an autograph handwritten letter from Jean Paulhan placed in fine, on the letterhead of the NRF, dated Tuesday [June 28, 1955]: "Cher Robert / J'ai été content de te voir / hier un peu tranquillement. This / M. Auvergnat is decidedly / very sympathetic. / When you see P.P. do you want to / tell him lots of things from / me. I think of him / often - and the day before yesterday, / when I heard of Adrienne / Monnier's death. Were they still great / friends? (I liked him. It / took that scumbag Saillet to drive a wedge between us). / to you, very affectionately / Jean P. / If I remember correctly, / the separate printing of the C.H. [Condition Humaine] / was done (8 or 10 copies) on the / text of the review, and / so soon after the composition was completed: that is / at the end of March 33. Besides, you'll find a few vari- / tes in the book (mostly deletions) / your / J". A very rare and handsome copy in a lined binding by Maylander.
