LEAUTAUD (Paul). Le Petit Ami. Novel. Paris, Société du Merc - Lot 141
LEAUTAUD (Paul). Le Petit Ami. Novel. Paris, Société du Mercure de France, 1903, in-12, 208 p., full lavallière Cape morocco, boards decorated with a double frame of 7 smoke-black stamped fillets, gilt edges, gilt fillets on the edges, lining bordered in the same morocco with a set of 5 gilt fillets, marbled paper endpapers, covers and spine, lined slipcase (binding signed Semet et Plumelle). Ex-libris Bibliothèque Bastide de la Pomme [Dr. Thumin] (Provenance: Bernard Loliée). Second bookplate Jacques Culot. First edition. Copy of the first printing on publisher's paper, with the cover and title at the rue de L'Echaudé-Saint-Germain address and the "Cocotte rouge" justification, attributed by the publisher to Léautaud to indicate author's copies. Enriched with a letter: "A Mademoiselle Jeanne Bouquet / Prenez exemple jeune fille sur / ces délicieuses créatures que j'ai / célébrées encore moins qu'elles le / méritent / P. Léautaud / 29 septembre 1927". Complete with an excerpt from the publisher's catalog (8 p.). Rare first edition of the author's first book, in which he evokes in a tone of autobiographical confidence his early years, his life among the lorettes and his mother, who died too soon. Léautaud was always opposed to reprinting the work, torn between the desire to rewrite it and the desire not to have written it. A very fine copy.
