CHARDONNE (Jacques). Le Ciel de Nieflheim. Sans lieu, publis - Lot 78
CHARDONNE (Jacques). Le Ciel de Nieflheim. Sans lieu, published by the author (Imprimerie de Lagny), 6-1943, in-12, 206 p., br., blank cover with trace of "Epreuves" stamp in violet ink, uncut (cover stitched, spine browned, inside very fresh). First and only edition published during the author's lifetime (no large paper). An occasional contributor to Drieu La Rochelle's NRF, Chardonne took part in German literary propaganda as an editor, even traveling twice to the European Writers' Congress in Weimar. His naivety in the face of Nazi atrocity is aberrant; he goes so far as to write: "The SS use their absolute power appropriately, and the population does not complain, after a certain habituation"... (p. 175). On the advice of those close to him, he decided not to publish "Le Ciel de Nieflheim", written in 1942 (which, writes Pierre Assouline, is a "senseless ode to Germany"), but nevertheless printed a few hundred "proofs" in 1943 to give to a few friends. As the Axis forces lost the upper hand, Chardonne attempted to recover most of the copies he had donated, with a view to destroying them. Two events also dissuaded him from publishing the book: 1° his son's arrest in Tunis for collusion with the Resistance, and his release thanks to the intervention of Gerhardt Heller. On May 24, 1943, he wrote to Gerhardt Heller: "My opinions have not changed, but publication would be an indignity on my part towards my family"; 2° the realization, in the wake of the Allied victories, that Germany had lost the war. He withdrew to Barbezieux, "I am withdrawing from everything... I will remain silent", he wrote in the same letter. Needless to say, this "book" is extremely rare. It would appear that the bibliophile from Jarnac, a great lover of Chardonne, did not own it./ IDEM. L'Epithalame. Paris, Grasset, 1929, in-12, br. uncut. Final edition printed in 295 copies, 1/240 Alfa satiné, 2nd paper after 55 pur fil. The author's first book in a new one-volume version, very different from the 1921 original / Set. 2 vol.
