VERHAEREN (Émile). Japanese images. Illustrations by Kwasson - Lot 44
VERHAEREN (Émile). Japanese images. Illustrations by Kwasson. Published by T. Hasegawa. Tokyo, Takejiro Hasegawa, [1896], 8° oblong, Japanese-style paperback, illustrated cover (cover defr. and spotted, scattered browning and spotting, small wetness at head of vol.). First edition of Verhaeren's 5 poems illustrated with 14 double-page prints by Kwasson, pseudonym of Munetaro Suzuki. This work determined the emergence of a Symbolist school of poetry in Japan. Our copy, probably from 1896, bears the address on the front cover: "T. Hasegawa / 10 Hiyoshicho / Tokyo", the address where the printer lived from 1890 to 1901. A rare copy, sought-after for its beautiful Kwasson color woodcuts.
