[Botany].- TOURNEFORT (Joseph Pitton de). Insitutiones rei h - Lot 16
[Botany].- TOURNEFORT (Joseph Pitton de). Insitutiones rei herbariae. Editio altera, gallica longe auctior, quingentis circiter Tabulis aneis adornata. Paris, Typographia Regia [Jean Anisson], 1700 (1703 on colophon), 2 vols. 4°, [22]-697-[7]54-[5] pp. with title page and 489 plates, full brown calf, richly ornamented spines with 5 nerves, title and greefer headpieces, gilt lace on the edges (partially dedicated), red edges (damaged headpieces, some spotting, few pages browned). First Latin edition of this important work, in which the botanist Tournefort (1658-1708) sets out his system of plant classification. The work comprises a text volume and an atlas volume, with 489 copper-engraved plates. The success of the work is due to the clarity and novelty of the text, as well as to the beautiful illustrations, created from life by Claude Aubriet. Tournefort, a native of Aix-en-Provence, held the chair of botany at the Jardin des Plantes, established by Louis XIII. Complete with 489 plates (Pritzel, 9427). A good copy.
