ROUSSEAU (Jean-Jacques). Émile, ou de l'éducation. Amsterdam - Lot 13
ROUSSEAU (Jean-Jacques). Émile, ou de l'éducation. Amsterdam [Paris], chez Jean Néaulme [Duchesne], 1762, 4 vols. in-12, [4]-VIII-[2]-466, [4]-407-1 blank, [6]-381-1 blank, [6]-455-1 blank-112 (Supplément à l'Émile, ou de l'éducation) (there is no false title to the 1st vol. of this edition), 3 frontispieces (of 4) and 1 engraving in the 1st vol. (p. 140), full contemporary marbled brown calf, smooth spine decorated with small irons, wine-lees chagrined title-pieces, gold filleted spines, marbled endpapers, pebbled edges (several damaged headpieces, rubbed spines, qqs dull corners). First edition. The question of format provoked heated debate between Rousseau and his publisher Duchesne, the latter wishing to offer for sale an in-12 edition as well as a smaller, more expensive in-8. According to McEachern, bibliographer of Rousseau's writings, this in-12 edition was the first printing of Émile, but it was published after the in-8 edition. An important work in Rousseau's thought, in which he addresses the essential antagonism of nature and culture from the perspective of pedagogy. A good copy.
