[COCTEAU] - CLERGUE (Lucien). Reunion of 8 signed autograph - Lot 647
[COCTEAU] - CLERGUE (Lucien). Reunion of 8 signed autograph letters, all accompanied by a laminated black-and-white photo (L'étang series). These letters on different-colored card stock, dated 1959, are all addressed to "mon très cher Jean [Cocteau]". 8 sheets, 8°, 4 pages. "Here I am, very sad. A few moments before taking the train for Arles, Picasso left me in the street, without a word, and he has my photos at his place - does he know, by the way? (...) I was probably crazy to want to confront the Fauve at all costs"; "Jamais deux sans trois mon très cher Jean. I'm in Cannes thanks to Pablo! Your Lucien"; "Mon très cher Jean, merci de votre lettre et de vos souhaits. I would so much like my ponds to help you heal!"; "In Paris out of 3 of your shows none were playing during my stay! pest!! so I didn't go out in the evening. Living in Paris is madness. Lucien". On Picasso's recommendation, Lucien Clergue met Jean Cocteau in 1956. From then on, the poet and the man he described as "an excellent photographer" exchanged letters and projects. But Clergue's greatest source of pride was undoubtedly the fact that, at the poet-filmmaker's request, he was one of the set photographers during the filming of Testament d'Orphée. A fine collection.
