CALDER (Alexander). Autograph handwritten letter, dated Apri - Lot 616
CALDER (Alexander). Autograph handwritten letter, dated April 29, 1958, addressed to George Staempfli (1910-1999), painter and founder of the Staempfli Gallery in New York. 1 sheet 4° in black ink bearing a double stamp: "Calder / Painter Hill Road / R.F.D. Roxbury / Conn. U.S.A." and "Brussels World's Fair". In this letter about the sculpture "The Whirling Ear", created for Expo 58 in Brussels, Alexander Calder requests that the photographer take a shot of the sculpture in the American pavilion, seen from above between the water jets. The letter also mentions a third payment to be made. The letter is accompanied by its stamped envelope, enriched with a red gouache drawing of Calder surrounded by the artist's beautiful, broad handwriting. Enclosed is George Staempfli's typed reply, under envelope, addressed to "Sandy" [Alexander Calder]. The mobile sculpture "The Whirling Ear" designed by Alexander Calder (1898 - 1976) was intended to occupy the lake in front of the American pavilion at the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. Along with other works conceived by the artist in the 1950s, it is part of an evolution towards works of monumental dimensions. Also included are various documents relating to this correspondence. A fine set.
