ANDRE (Francis). "The Sailing Submarine. No. 0 to No. 7. Bru - Lot 552
ANDRE (Francis). "The Sailing Submarine. No. 0 to No. 7. Brux, L'Auteur, 1948-1950, 8 fasc. 4°, sheets, illustrated cover (crease and faint spots on cover of No. 0, others in very good condition). First edition. Complete collection of the post-war series of "Le Sous-marin à voiles" magazine. Sailor, yachtsman, journalist, painter, draftsman, sculptor, decorator, costume designer and inventor, Francis André (Mons, 1906 - Brussels, 1972) was a maverick and anarchist. He dropped out of university to sail around the world on cargo ships, until he found himself imprisoned in a camp during the Second World War. Initially a cartoonist, he expressed himself in his own magazine, 'Le Sous-marin à voiles', "a small independent organ of the dolent navigation and troubled little song of the maritime continent". He then went on to create animated stage statues for the Théâtre royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, leaving behind a whole world of automata-totems. Francis André was a visionary, an anxious man, a poet of movement and mechanics. A rare and beautiful complete collection.
