GIONO (Jean). Colline. Paris, Grasset, "Cahiers verts", 1929 - Lot 151
GIONO (Jean). Colline. Paris, Grasset, "Cahiers verts", 1929, in-12, cherry half-chagrin with corners, 5-rib spine, author, title and head gilt, double cover and spine cons. marbled endpapers (binding signed Bellevallée). First edition. 1/170 num. ex. on vélin pur fil, 2nd paper after 62 Madagascar, and among these one of twenty numbered in Roman numerals (ex. n° XVIII). Enriched copy with a signed autograph letter, placed at the head of the volume, on the letterhead of the "Société des auteurs, compositeurs et éditeurs de musique / Commission des Examens". On this bill signed by the chairman of the board, Battaille-Henri, Giono is asked to compose 3 verses and 1 chorus, with "La Terre" as the imposed subject. The author replies: "Monsieur Giono has no time to lose in writing you three verses and 1 chorus about the Earth, after having written the equivalent of four thousand pages in fourteen novels about the Earth, which the Society alone is unaware of. He considers this request to be of such a humorous quality that he reserves the right to share it with the various readers of the newspapers to which he contributes. Without prejudice to legal action against the Société des auteurs, which has improperly affected his rights. Jean Giono". A fine copy.
