Paris, Nouvelle Revue française, 1921, small 4°, 40 p., fawn half-maroquin with corners, 5-rib spine, gilt author, title, date and head, marbled endpapers, cover and spine cons. slipcase (spine darkened, cover spine stained). First illustrated edition, printed in 412 numbered copies, all on Lafuma-Navarre paper. For the first illustrated edition of this book, Gide enlisted the help of Marie Laurencin, who had returned to France after several years in exile. Having become German through her marriage to Baron Otto von Wätjen in June 1914, she had lived through the war in Spain. On her return to Paris, she divorced her husband the same year as this publication, and began her collaboration with the Ballets Russes.
