RODENBACH (Georges). Le Règne du silence. Poème. Paris, Char - Lot 42
RODENBACH (Georges). Le Règne du silence. Poème. Paris, Charpentier, 1891, 8°, cherry half-maroquin with corners, gilt separating fillets on covers, 5-rib spine, gilt author, title, date and floral mosaic boxes, gilt head on witnesses, combed endpapers, cover and spine cons., bordered slipcase (nerves and lower edge of slipcase rubbed) (binding signed Tchékeroul). Ex-libris of Gustave Nellens. Edition largely original. One of the very few copies on Hollande, enriched with an autograph poem of 14 verses, signed (printed on pp. 192-193), 2 autograph letters, signed, addressed to Théo Hannon, dated January 23 and early February 1882 (each one 8° page, franked envelopes enclosed), and a photograph of the author opposite the title. In the first letter, Georges Rodenbach, secretary of the Union littéraire belge, asks Hannon to read some of his "amusing Brussels sketches" at one of the Society's meetings, or to have them read "by one of the pimped-out beauties of his official harem, like the all-charming one with whom he spent an hour at the Café des Mille Colonnes, in his Society". In the second letter, he apologizes for being unable to attend the session due to "a nasty sore throat". He returns in expressive terms to the seduction of "la toute-charmante", who will give Hannon's verses a taste, "all those fine candies candied in lust...". A very fine copy in a perfectly executed binding by Tchékeroul.
