DESCARTES (René). The Passions of the Soul. À Amsterdam, che - Lot 2
DESCARTES (René). The Passions of the Soul. À Amsterdam, chez Louys Elzevier, 1650, in-12 (13,2 x 8 cm), [48]-272-[14] p., full blond glazed calf, richly decorated 5-rib spine with title-piece, gilt framing lace on covers, gilt lace on spine and back, red edges, combed endpapers, qqs. notations (spine and back rubbed, 2 corners slightly dulled, top cap missing, few russets). Original edition in in-12 format, published the year after the first edition in 8° format. This was Descartes' last written work, based on his correspondence with Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia. "Les Passions de l'âme" is not a treatise on ethics, but is mainly dedicated to the mutual influence that exists between the soul and the body. The work had a great influence on several thinkers, such as Robert Hooke, Giovanni Borelli, Jan Swammerdam and Thomas Willis. A rare and good copy.
