RHEE (Seund Ja). Fan in engraved catalpa wood and Japon paper, decorated with woodcuts by Seund Ja Rhee. Presented in a wooden box. Box size: 9.5 x 38 x 3 cm; open fan size: 32 x 54 cm. Seund Ja Rhee (1918-2009) was a Korean artist who studied at Jinju Girl'sHigh School before moving to Japan in 1935 to study for 3 years. She left for Paris in 1951, due to the Korean War, and entered the Grande Chaumière in 1953. She exhibited at the Salon des Surindépendants in 1959. A prolific artist with over 1,000 paintings, 700 engravings and numerous drawings, she exhibited throughout her lifetime, mainly in France and Korea (84 solo exhibitions and over 300 group shows).
