PICABIA (Francis). Poèmes et dessins de la fille née sans mè - Lot 781
PICABIA (Francis). Poèmes et dessins de la fille née sans mère. 18 drawings - 51 poems. Lausanne, Imprimeries réunies, 1918, large 8°, 80 p., 18 full-page drawings, br. (cover partially browned with restoration at head of spine). Very rare first edition (no large paper). Metaphorically referring to the machine, the theme inaugurates Picabia's mechanomorphic period, which lasted until 1922. At the time of these drawings, Picabia was suffering from neurasthenia. Falling into a serious state of prostration, the artist found himself physically incapable of wielding a paintbrush, which is why, in 1917, he turned to poetry, followed by drawing. The poems and drawings, also begun in 1917, are dedicated to the three neurologists who treated him. Picabia sent his work to Tzara, who had asked him to join the Dada movement from Zurich. This exchange gave rise to an abundant correspondence and a long friendship that would be decisive in the birth of the Dada movement in Paris. A rare and good copy.
