GISO lighting fixtures. Catalog of GISO lighting fixtures, d - Lot 478
GISO lighting fixtures. Catalog of GISO lighting fixtures, designed by W.H. GISPEN according to the latest data in Lighting Technique and Aesthetics. Bruxelles-Rotterdam-Amsterdam, (ca 1926), 4°, br. with illustrated title pasted on top cover. Willem Hendrik Gispen (1890-1981) was a Dutch pioneer of functionalism. Before the outbreak of hostilities in the First World War, he studied design in Rotterdam. In 1916, he founded his eponymous metal workshop, dedicated to ornamental decorative arts in iron, brass and bronze. In the 1920s, despite links with leading practitioners and theoreticians of modernism, Gispen's company turned to mechanical production and rational, economical, minimalist designs. His geometrically reduced "Giso Light" is today considered one of the greatest icons of Dutch design. This lamp represents the culmination of Gispen's entry into functionalism.
