Enriched copy with a dedication "to Mr. Eirik Labonne, former ambassador to Spain, / to whom I express my wish for the greatest success / in his present task, as well as my wishes for / the triumph of France which will also be the triumph of my Patria / Paris at the Entrance of 1940 / [unidentified signature]. Luis Quintanilla was a major figure in the Spanish avant-garde, and a close friend of Juan Gris, who encouraged his artistic vocation. A painter, muralist, draftsman, engraver and illustrator, his anti-fascist convictions as a socialist militant also led him to become a spy in the service of the Second Spanish Republic. He was in New York when the Republic was defeated, and vowed not to return from exile until Franco's regime had been overthrown. This vow was not fulfilled until 1976. He died two years later in Madrid, ill and destitute, without having been able to take the measure of the recognition his work was about to receive. His drawing was strongly influenced by Expressionism, and he came to be known as the Spanish Grosz. He struck up a close friendship with Hemingway, which explains the latter's warm preface to "All the Brave.
