"L'Ymagier". N° 1. Paris, October 1894, small 4°, 67 p., br. - Lot 56
"L'Ymagier". N° 1. Paris, October 1894, small 4°, 67 p., br. (spine damaged and missing, cover detached and frayed at right edge). First edition. Complete with 2 Epinal images: "Jésus sur la Croix" and "Le Miroir du Pécheur", as well as the lithograph printed in blue after Emile Bernard's original drawing "Sainte Hélène". First issue of the influential and short-lived French Symbolist art magazine, founded and edited by Remy de Gourmont and Alfred Jarry. It was commissioned by Gourmont's friend and inspiration, Berthe de Courrières, and financed by Jarry, who had just inherited the family fortune. Jarry contributed to the first five issues. The magazine was illustrated with Gothic woodcuts after Cranach, Dürer and large Epinal images, printed on the original woodcuts (in color and folded). L'Ymagier is also illustrated with out-of-text woodcuts and lithographs by Armand Seguin, Emile Bernard, Charles Filiger, Georges d'Espagnat, Gauguin and others.
