First edition illustrated with 40 color plates based on the author's watercolors and paintings of the natural wonders of the tropical world of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and Indonesia. Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919) was a German biologist, philosopher and freethinker. He introduced Charles Darwin's theories to Germany. In 1881 and 1882, he sailed the tropical seas and Ceylon.
