ANDRE (Francis). - Lot 348
ANDRE (Francis). "Le Train de la dernière heure" (1930). Wash on paper, mounted on cardboard, titled, dated, signed and dedicated to Willy Kessels. Size of support and subject: 36 x 53 cm. Born to a lawyer, Francis André (1906-1972) grew up in the countryside. With his law degree in hand, he dreamed of adventure and joined the merchant navy. At the same time, he self-published booklets featuring his drawings, his other passion. Francis André is an original. In his apartment on Place Flagey, where he moved when he returned to the mainland, he had set up an electric train to bring food from the kitchen to the living room, and cobbled together a system of pulleys to bring drinks up from the ground-floor café. He was then working as a journalist for "Le Rouge et le Noir", a literary, satirical and political weekly. After the war, on his return from captivity, he became a carpenter and stage manager for the Théâtre royal de la Monnaie. He worked on a number of Maurice Béjart's shows, among others. In the workshops at La Monnaie, Francis André spent his spare time making drawing machines and numerous new automata. In 1971, thanks to Olivier Strebelle, these creations were shown to the public for the first time. A rarity.
