VALERY (Paul). Eupalinos. P., NRF, 1924, 4° tellière, 221 p., full English green morocco, double set of gilt framing fillets on boards, with a gilt snake in the center forming the letter "R" (Gaston Riou's number), 5-rib spine decorated with a quadruple set of gilt fillets throughout, author, title and head gilt, filleted edges, gold-edged and filleted counterpanes, combed endpapers, covers and spine cons. (spine evenly faded, head and spine ends rubbed, upper corners recessed and slightly dulled) (binding signed Gruel). New edition published one year after the original. Unnumbered copy on laid paper, with an original drawing in color by Paul Valéry of Robinson Crusoe, dated and signed by Bénerville, Sept. 1, 1922. This copy, belonging to Gaston Riou, French writer and politician (1883-1958), is also enriched with a folio featuring Valéry's autograph copy of a sentence from Eupalinos, and an ex-dono in the hand of the American philanthropist and friend of Gaston Riou, Florence Blumenthal (1873-1930). Eupalinos, written for the collection of Architectures by Louis Sue and André Mare, is an important work in Valéry's oeuvre.
