JACOB (Max). Filibuth ou la Montre en or. P., NRF, 1922, 4° tellière, br. (qqs rares piqsures et rouss.). First edition. 1/108 deluxe copies reprinted on vergé pur fil. Enclosed is a handwritten letter (1 leaf of 2 pages), dated "St Benoit sur Loire / Loiret / April 24, 1923" and addressed to "mon bon cher vieil ami Vandeputte" [Henri Vandeputte was a French-speaking Belgian writer, 1877-1952]: "Merci mille fois de ta lettre qui m'a ému / tu as admirablement compris le style de / Filibuth / [....] / I had here a doctor, a temp / who became my friend, he took your book from the / dictionary in ique that I pointed out to him / he is crazy about this book and must buy it. In the meantime / I've entrusted him with my copy because / he can't do without this book. This man is / an exceptionally learned being, artist, poet [...] / My life here is untold: I work and live alone. My next book will be less well / written but more thought out [...]". Max Jacob arrived in Saint-Benoît on June 24, 1921. He remained there until 1928, dividing his time between work and prayer. Isolation began to weigh on him, and he returned to Paris in 1928. Max Jacob returned to his former life, frequenting salons and artists of all kinds. Eventually, in 1936, he decided to return to Saint-Benoît, this time for good.
