Painter, illustrator, teacher and decorator Ivan Yakovlevitch Bilibine was born near St. Petersburg in 1876. Attracted to drawing from an early age, he studied art and worked for two years in the studio of the great Russian painter Repine. Travelling around Europe, he discovered the works of Von Stuck and Böcklin in Munich at the age of 22, but it was Russian folk art that was to be his primary influence. Co-founder with Léon Bakst of the St. Petersburg group "Mir Iskousstva" [The World of Art], a collective of Russian artists aspiring to a revival of national art / Set. 2 vols.
