BROODTHAERS (Marcel)
A throw of the dice will never abolish chance - Image. Antwerp, Galerie Wide White Space; Köln, Galerie Michael Werner, 1969, 4° (32.5 x 25 cm), br. First edition. 1/100 head copies, of which 1/90 on transparent mechanographic paper numbered from 1 to 90, this one signed M.B. and justified "Ex. n° 50" by hand. Unlike the current edition, there is no mention of "catalog copy" on the verso of the 2nd cover. Complete with the two inserts cut to page size, allowing the reader to isolate one or 2 pages at will. Mallarmé's text, published by Gallimard in 1914, has been replaced by long black "cache-texte" lines. "Broodthaers reduces Un Coup de Dés to its structure - or to put it another way he elevates the structure of the work to a concept worthy of study in its own right, thus acknowledging Mallarmé's own fetishistic attention to this aspect of his work. Rendering the structure concrete, visible, almost tactile, Broodthaers offers a conceptual analysis of Mallarmé's poem across the distance of a nearly a century...It would be hard to imagine a more subtle treatment of Mallarmé's work, or one more capable of demonstrating its essential properties, than this reworked book by Broodthaers". (Johanna Drucker in The Century of Artists' Books, Drucker, Granary, 1995, pp. 115-116). Mint condition.
