ZHANG (Hua). "Composition" (ca. 1955-60). Oil on paper, sign - Lot 491
ZHANG (Hua). "Composition" (ca. 1955-60). Oil on paper, signed on the lower left corner, mounted in a wooden frame. Frame size: 61.5 x 81.5 cm; subject: 48 x 62 cm. After studying art, Zhang Hua (1898-1970) taught painting for several years in China. He then moved to Canada and New York, where he painted in a figurative vein, concentrating on New York skyscrapers. Around 1935, he left for Europe and settled in Paris, where he studied at the Grande Chaumière. There he met Pan Yuliang, Sanyu and Zao Wou-Ki. It was during this period that he moved towards lyrical abstraction. Having hardly ever been exhibited, Hua Zhang's work remains little-known.
