SCHOONHOVEN (Jan). "Surrealist Composition" (1940). Watercolor and ink on card, dated and signed upper right corner. Size of support and subject: 14.5 x 10 cm (brown stains). Jan Schoonhaven (1914-1994) studied at the MULO in Delft, then from 1930 to 1934 at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague. Inspired by Klee, then by the work of Otto Dix and Georges Grosz, he turned to Expressionism. He held his first group exhibition at the Salon des Indépendants in Amsterdam in 1938. Around 1955-1956, he produced his first white monochromes in relief and papier-mache. In 1957, he founded the "Informele Groep" (The Informals) with Bram Bogart, Armando, Van Bohemen, Jan Henderikse and Henk Peeters. In 1960, he founded the "Nulgroep" (Null Group) with Armando, Jan Henderikse and Henk Peeters. His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions in the Netherlands and abroad.
