[CADERE] "American Art in Belgium. L'Art... - Lot 646 - Les ventes Damien Voglaire SRL
[CADERE] "American Art in Belgium. L'Art à l'Envers / De Kunst Omgekeerd". Poster-tract, offset printing, size : 88 x 58 cm, bilingual French-Dutch. Rare document dated May 20, 1977 criticizing the international exhibition "American Art in Belgium" organized by the Palais des Beaux-Arts of Brussels (from May 25 to August 28, 1977). It highlighted the numerous works by American artists held in Belgian private and public collections between 1945 and 1975. The pamphlet - under the editorial responsibility of Lotte Boogh Mees in Antwerp - questions the "nationalistic" concept of the exhibition and its selection criteria. This text is in line with the rhetoric of the conceptual art collective Art and Language, whose members are among the first signatories. Among them, we find among others Americans like Sol Lewitt, Joseph Kosuth, Dan Graham and Keith Sonnier, the Belgians Panamarenko, Lili Dujourie, Jan Vercruysse, Guy Mees or Jacques Charlier, as well as André Cadere and Niele Toroni. A copy of the poster is kept at the MUHKA in Antwerp (Johan Pas, "Artists' Publications: The Belgian Contribution (Books, Magazines, Artists, Publishers)," Cologne, Verlag Walther König Buchhandlung, 2017). Enclosed is the catalog of the exhibition "American Art in Belgium", Brussels, Palais des Beaux-Arts, 1977, 176 p., br. Texts by Karel Geirlandt and Georges Roque. List of exhibitions of American art in Belgium from 1945 to 1975 and bibliography of Belgian publications on American art / Set. 2 pieces.
