NOIRÉ (Maxime). "Orientalist Landscape, Algerian Mountains". Oil on canvas, signed on the lower right corner, mounted in original wooden frame. Dim. frame : 60 x 142,5 cm ; subject : 36,5 x 118,5 cm (1 micro loss of material). Maxime Noiré (1861-1927) is a self-taught painter. He went to Algeria for health reasons and settled there around 1882. He quickly acquired a reputation as an Orientalist painter. After having traveled in the South of Algeria and having a workshop in Algiers, he finally settled in Bou-Saâda, which he made a famous place in the wake of the painter Etienne Dinet. In 1905, he was appointed official painter of the Navy and the Colonies. He was one of the founders of the Society of Algerian and Orientalist Artists. Maxime Noiré is the father-in-law of the painter Paul Jouve. His works can be found in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Algiers, the Cirta Museum in Constantine, the Museum of Art and History in Narbonne and the Palais de la Porte Dorée in Paris.
