MERCATOR (Michael). "America sive India nova (...)". Copper engraving, hand-colored, mounted in a wooden frame. Dim. frame : 55 x 63 cm ; subject : 37,3 x 46,5 cm (browning, slight whitish discharge at the central fold). Map decorated with 4 medallions at the corners, 3 containing maps of the Gulf of Mexico, Cuba and Haiti, the fourth contains the title. The remaining border is decorated with a beautiful arabesque. This is the only known printed map by Gerard Mercator's grandson Michael, engraved for the "Atlantis pars altera" (Duisburg 1595), the third part of Gerard Mercator's Atlas.
