ZHANG (Hua). "Composition" (ca 1955-60). Oil on paper, signed on the lower left corner, mounted in a wooden frame. Size of frame : 61,5 x 81,5 cm ; subject : 48 x 62 cm. After studying art, Zhang Hua (1898-1970) taught painting in China for a few years. He then lived in Canada, then in New York where he painted in a figurative vein, concentrating on the representation of New York skyscrapers. Around 1935, he left for Europe and settled in Paris where he studied at the Grande Chaumière. There he met Pan Yuliang, Sanyu and Zao Wou-Ki. It was at this time that he moved towards lyrical abstraction. Having almost never exhibited, the work of Hua Zhang remains unknown.
