PENROSE (Valentine). Gifts of the females. Preface by Paul Eluard. P., Les Pas Perdus, 1951, 4°, br., cover filled. Original edition printed at 400 copies, numbered 1/350 copies from 51 to 400, including an original etching by Picasso (proof crossed out on Arches vellum, justified 120/350). This book is a suite of 26 full-page collages (reminiscent of those of Max Ernst in "La femme 100 têtes"), accompanied by "automatic" texts in French and English, which are supposed to tell the story of Maria Elona y Rubia. The book is prefaced by Eluard, who expressed his admiration for the feminine phantasmagoria of Valentine Penrose, and it is perhaps through the poet that Picasso made the etching for the book. It represents two women embracing on a bed (Cramer. Pablo Picasso, les livres illustrés, n° 61).
