"Le Cocu magnifique" is the masterpiece of Fernand Crommelynck. This tragic farce, freely inspired by Shakespeare's Othello, portrays a man who is jealous to the point of insanity, and whom a loving woman cannot pull away from his demons. Created in Paris at the Théâtre de l'Oeuvre by Lugné-Poe, who also played the lead role (Bruno) alongside Regina Camier (Stella), it was a huge success. Staged by Meyerhold in Russia in 1922, it gave rise to the first constructivist staging.
