ROUSSELET (Louis).
India of the Rajahs. Journey in Central India and in the presidencies of Bombay and Bengal. Work containing 317 woodcuts drawn by our most famous artists and six maps. P., Hachette, 1877, large 4°, [6]-807 p., publisher's polychrome binding, gilt edges (spine and headbands rubbed) (binding signed A. Souze). First edition and first printing of the 317 illustrations, including a frontispiece and 109 hors-texte, woodcut from photographs and sketches by the author. The frontispiece represents Louis Rousselet in the costume of a Sirdar of the Bhopal court. For the rest, this beautiful iconography reveals a predilection for architecture and for portraits of personalities captured on the spot. Scenes of animated groups also form anecdotal digressions that punctuate the whole.
