TISSOT. On the health of literary people.... - Lot 70 - Les ventes Damien Voglaire SRL
TISSOT. On the health of literary people. Second enlarged edition. Lausanne, Franç. Grasset, 1799, in-12, XVI-260-(12) p., full contemporary speckled calf, decorated spine. A fine copy. By the author of "onanism". In the 18th century, the health of "intellectuals" became a new medical and literary issue. With "De la santé des gens de lettres" (first edition, 1768), the Swiss physician Samuel-Auguste Tissot proposed a classic book to the literati, combining tables of clinical cases and remedies to treat the ills caused by "literary intemperance". In 1775, Tissot reworked and expanded his text, fully highlighting his views on the physical hazards of the studious life, as well as his nuanced position on the moral implications of all intellectual work. Turning reflection against reflection, Tissot opened a dialogue between physicians and scholars that would become increasingly complicated in the following century.
