[TERRASSON (Jean) - MALEBRANCHE. A treatise... - Lot 67 - Les ventes Damien Voglaire SRL
[TERRASSON (Jean) - MALEBRANCHE. A treatise on the created infinite, with the explanation of the possibility of Transubstantiation. Treatise on Confession and Communion. Amsterdam, Marc-Michel Rey, 1760, in-12, title, XII-248 p., paperback (at all margins, stamps on title, edges slightly soiled). The "Traité de l'infini créé" is a "classic" clandestine text: it circulated in manuscript form during the first half of the 18th century and was printed by Marc-Michel Rey in 1769. Often attributed to Malebranche, it is in fact due to the abbot Jean Terrasson, who develops all the consequences of the Cartesian definition of matter by demonstrating that the universe is actually infinite: infinite extent, infinity of minds. From this follows a refutation of Fontenelle: the inhabitants of the other planets are men. Finally, the infinite extent is also eternal. We can see that the materialism stemming from Cartesianism blossomed well before the "epicureanism" of Diderot (notice of the Champion editions).
