[PITHOU, François]. Codex canonum vetus ecclesiae... - Lot 56 - Les ventes Damien Voglaire SRL
[PITHOU, François]. Codex canonum vetus ecclesiae romanae. Paris, Ad. Beys, 1609, in-12, [48]-703-[1] p., full marbled calf, 5-ribbed spine, title-piece, red edges, bookplate (binder rubbed, upper bit cracked, corners dull, inside very fresh). First revised edition, with additional texts, of this important theological work, a collection of all the canons of the ancient Catholic Church. It was produced by the French canon lawyer François Pithou (1543-1621). It is a catalog of canonical rules from all the councils and decrees of the popes. The first part is dedicated to the councils, from the Council of Nicea to the Council of Africa, with 12 successive councils; the second part to the popes, from Pope Syricius to Gregory II. 413 canons for the councils, 229 papal decrees. This "corpus" was first published in Mainz in 1525, in opposition to the principles of the Lutheran Reformation. A second title page in our 1609 edition reproduces the 1525 title page after some preliminary leaves. A good copy.
