[PALISSOT de MONTENOY (Charles). L'Homme... - Lot 54 - Les ventes Damien Voglaire SRL
[PALISSOT de MONTENOY (Charles). L'Homme dangereux, comedie par l'auteur de la comédie des philosophes. Amsterdam, 1770, 8°, 199-1 bl.-(1 : Errata)-1 bl. p., full contemporary speckled calf, smooth decorated spine (some wear). A fine copy. Charles Palissot de Montenoy (1730-1814), is a playwright from Lorraine, then French, unknown, admirer and disciple of Voltaire, but paradoxically often denounced as an anti-philosopher opponent of the philosophical party, notably for his criticism of Diderot and the Encyclopedists. He is the author of the comedy "The Philosophers", which had a huge success and caused a scandal. "The Dangerous Man" is the occasion of complicated intrigues, in which Palissot himself played an unclear role. He spread the rumor that the play was written by one of his enemies and that it was him who was attacked. In the end, the government had the work banned: probably at the request of the philosophical party, which had many supporters at the Court and which denounced the author's maneuvers.
