Born in Cadiz, José Luis Rey Vila (1900-1983) studied drawing at the School of Fine Arts in Cadiz and then in Barcelona. From July 1936, he put his drawing at the service of the social revolution. The UGT [General Union of Workers] commissioned him to draw two albums: the first on life at the front (12 escenas de guerra) and the second to celebrate the days of July 1936 (jornadas heroïcas de julio 1936). He produced a series of watercolors that were used in calendars, postcards and as covers for various magazines. He chose the pseudonym Sim so as not to endanger his close family who were stuck in Seville. Rey Vila settled in Paris between 1939 and 1944, near the Buttes-Chaumont. After the liberation, he continued to draw under his real name Rey Vila. His favorite themes were bulls, flamenco and Don Quixote. He will never return to Spain. Very beautiful and rare set.
