ZWEIG (Stefan). Magellan. French version by Alzir Hella. P., Grasset, 1938, 8°, 288 p., 1 folding map in fine, br. (spine browned, 2nd cover faded). French first edition. Copy of the press service enriched with a letter : "To Louis Gillet / from his / devoted friend / Stefan Zweig / 1938". An unpublished signed autograph letter from Stefan Zweig addressed to the same Louis Gillet is enclosed. 14 lines written in French in blue ink on a letter-card from the Hotel Louvois in Paris, stamped September 26, 1940: "My dear friend, this is the life that / I lead in Paris that I could / see the article that you have been / so friendly to dedicate to me that / this moment, returning from our lunch / at the Cains. I was desperate that / none of my friends had / pointed out to me already yesterday this manifestation / so precious of your friendship, which / makes me really proud. How can I thank you? Not with words, but / with a faithful friendship of which I hope / you will always be able to give / proofs. Your most devoted / Stefan Zweig". Louis Gillet (Paris, 1876-1943) was a historian and critic of art and literature, museum curator, literary columnist for the "Revue des deux mondes", professor of art history and member of the Académie française.
