NEWTON (Isaac). La Chronologie des anciens... - Lot 13 - Les ventes Damien Voglaire SRL
NEWTON (Isaac). La Chronologie des anciens royaumes corrigée à laquelle on a joint une Chronique abrégée, qui contient ce qui s'est passé anciennement en Europe, jusqu'à la conquête de la Perse par Alexandre le Grand. Paris, Martin, Coignard, Guerin, Montalant, 1728, 4°, (20) f. of title, preface, catalog of Newton's works and warning of the English editor, 416 pages, (2) f. of table, approval, privilege and errata, contemporary brown calf, spine ribbed, title page dedicated, red edges (minor flaws, but nice copy). First French edition of this history of the first great civilizations, namely those of the Greeks, Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Medes and Persians. The original edition, posthumous, was published in London the same year, and translated from English into French by François Granet and Marthan. Complete with 3 copper-engraved folding plates, representing plans of the Temple of Solomon. Composed by Isaac Newton (1643-1727) for his own amusement, this chronological system was published without his knowledge by a certain Abbé Conti, to whom Newton had entrusted a copy. He was thus obliged, against his intention, to give a more faithful edition, but he could only prepare it, death surprising him before its publication.
