FERNEL (Jean).Ioannis Fernelii ambiani de vacuandi ratione liber. Paris, Christian Wechel, in- 8°, 1545, 141-2 bl. (1 : typographical mark) p. Bound with : ESTIENNE (Charles) Caroli Stephani, De nutrimentis, ad Baillyum, libri tres. Paris, Robert Estienne, 1550, in-8°, 156-(20) p. bound together formerly in sow skin over hardback, boards decorated in cold with floral motifs and busts (lacking at the front cut and the inner corner of the rear). Jean Fernel (ca. 1506-1558), one of the great French physicians, mathematicians and astronomers. In this very rare first edition, Fernel denounces the misuse of bloodletting by physicians of the time. "The youngest son of Henri I Estienne and Guionne Viart, Charles Estienne was the enfant terrible of the Saint-Etienne dynasty: he is often defined negatively, as opposed to his older brother Robert, the king's printer and publisher of the great Bibles in French, Latin, Greek and Hebrew. Henri-Jean Martin said, in 2000, that his biography remained to be written. Since then, Hélène Cazes has tried to paint a portrait of him that is mainly intellectual. The character of Charles is difficult to grasp (...). Between 1547 and 1550, Charles Estienne republished Terence and Baïf, he proposed Principles and Elements of the Latin Language in 1549, a comedy translated from Italian, Les abusz, and he signed his name (for the first time) to a medical book on diet, De nutrimentis. During this period, he appeared as a dilettante jack-of-all-trades: author of books on medicine, botany and dietetics, he published Pierre Belon's work on fish, but also books on history, and showed a pronounced taste for comedy (...). Bénédicte Boudou, "Charles Estienne, un médecin pédagogue ou un courtisan masqué?", digitized in Openedition. Two rare 16th century prints.
