"Mask of Nepal". Wooden sculpture mounted on a black metal base. Size : 39 x 22,5 x 8 cm. Discovered, like the arts of Africa and Oceania, by artists and travelers, the masks of the Himalayas have only very recently aroused the interest of researchers, and their precise meaning remains unknown. The tribal masks of the Rai, Gurung, Magar and Tharu represent gods, demons, fabulous animals and local deities. The cleaned aspect of the mask and its pronounced brown patina come from an ancient approach of collectors who prefer a clean and shiny object to one kept in its juice.
