VAN GOGH - Letters from Vincent Van Gogh... - Lot 861 - Les ventes Damien Voglaire SRL
VAN GOGH - Letters from Vincent Van Gogh to Emile Bernard. Paris, Ambroise Vollard, 1911, 4°, numerous illustrations in color (2) and in black and white (100), full green cloth bradel, title page on the back. The edition of the letters is preceded by a "Collection of publications on Vincent Van Gogh made since his death by Émile Bernard preceded by a new preface by the same author". "Between 1887 and 1889, Vincent wrote very personal letters to the painter and writer Émile Bernard (1868-1941), the future founder of the Pont-Aven School, whom he had met in Paris at the Cormon studio during the winter of 1886-87. Most of these letters begin with "My dear friend Bernard" and are accompanied by Vincent's own sketches and studies: Fruit Trees, Orchard, Bedroom, Sower at Sunset, Moors of the Camargue and Boats at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. The painter also delivers his sometimes very critical comments on the drawings and poems of his young friend. He communicates his thoughts on painting and reveals certain aspects of his intimate life.
