ANDRE (Francis).
The Train of the Last Hour. Preface by Albert Guislain. Unedited. [L'Auteur], 1931, 4°, 51 p., br. with original photograph on front cover. (cover badly damaged, without spine, inside very fresh). First edition printed at 50 copies. (ex. n° 44). Extremely rare. Born to a lawyer father, Francis André (1906-1972) grew up in the countryside. His law degree in pocket, he dreams of adventures and joins the merchant navy. At the same time, he self-published booklets with his drawings, his other passion. Francis André is an original. In his apartment on Place Flagey, where he moved when he returned to the mainland, he had set up an electric train that brought the dishes from the kitchen to the living room and tinkered with a system of pulleys to bring drinks up from the first floor café from outside. He worked as a journalist for "Le Rouge et le Noir", a literary, satirical and political weekly. After the war, after returning from captivity, he became a carpenter and stage manager for the Théâtre royal de la Monnaie. He collaborated, among others, on several shows of Maurice Béjart. In the workshops of the Monnaie, Francis André spent his free time making drawing machines and numerous new automatons. In 1971, thanks to Olivier Strebelle, these creations were shown to the public for the first time.
